1. Lift Kits
A lift kit can be a great way to upgrade the suspension on an SUV like Wrangler for off-roading. Its job's to improve ground clearance, raising the vehicle's body or frame by anywhere from 1 inch to 7 or more and helping it perform better off-road in one shot. Put one in your Jeep, and it'll be less likely to end up with an underbody damaged by going over bumps and potholes while dodging rocks and downed trees.
The added value: it'll allow for installing larger tires, too -- like BFGoodrich Trail-Terrain T/A tires, replacements for the stock 265/60 R18 tires on the factory 18-inch wheels of a Wrangler. The result: instant better grip off the trail, through the thick of it.
2. Running Boards

That can be a bummer over uneven terrain, like in dense woods, where the space needed to do so is at a tight premium. Running boards are the solution, offering extended stepping surfaces that, given their flat and wide profiles and board-spanning treads, are a lot better than a bare door sill. (Those, you usually clamber over and often slip on.)
Bonus: as they mount close to or flush with rocker panels in most cases, they can even take advantage of all that extra lifted ride height. Our advice, though: get the stainless steel, cast aluminum, or other load-bearing metal kind with a powder coat; they'll be more durable and resist corrosion better. Even better: go for powered, illuminated running boards; not only will you get a better view of the step area, but the boards will also be a "welcome wagon," in most cases, extending automatically when your SUV's doors open and retracting hands-free when they close.
3. Recovery Equipment
If you drive a pickup like the Jeep Gladiator Rubicon, then you probably already know the kinds of tough situations you can get into off-grid -- getting stuck in the mud is the least of them. To be able to pull yourself out -- and help a buddy out, even -- you'll need the right recovery equipment: above all, a properly weight- and terrain-rated winch.
If you want to have as safe and reliable a setup as you can get, though, add synthetic winch ropes, for one, plus soft shackles and some recovery straps that substitute the everyday metal hooks for loops. Just be sure to install one made of a ruggeder metal like steel (or better, aluminum) and not the old-fashioned wood. Don't forget a good set of crossbars, either -- they'll help distribute cargo weight (think big stuff like bikes, kayaks, and the like) a lot better and more evenly (and you won't have to worry about damage to an otherwise bare roof).
The result: you'll get anchor points for tie-downs galore, good for securing luggage easily. Most are even a breeze to install -- just a matter of putting together some modular towers and feet using a fitting kit. Do that, and you're good to go. (Pro tip: don't write off a roof rack just because you may drive a Jeep SUV with a soft top, like Wrangler, either -- some racks, you can still put on anyway!)
5. Body Cladding
