Your factory drive shaft, sometimes called a drivetrain, has an important job. It may be one of the most important for driving. It transforms both torque and rotary energy from your engine into motion. Shift your vehicle into drive, and your drive shaft uses that energy to move all the auto parts that get you going.
Whatever make and model you drive, it has one of four types of drive shafts: front-wheel, rear-wheel, four-wheel, or all-wheel.
Front-wheel drive uses your front wheels to move your vehicle, and all parts are installed in the front. Constant velocity joints ("CV joints") connect to your differential to make everything work.
Rear-wheel drive uses your rear wheels for motive power. Your drive shaft connects to your transmission at one end and your differential at the other. It uses universal joints ("U-joints") instead of CV joints.
Four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive use two drive shafts, with the one up front connecting to both your front differential and your transfer case via U-joints. Every wheel helps move your vehicle here.
Unfortunately, any drive shaft can get old and break down. The signs of a bad one are many. Having trouble making turns, for instance? Is your undercarriage vibrating? Do you perhaps hear loud clunks when shifting? You could have a worn or failing U-joint or coupler. These symptoms sometimes indicate bad carrier bearings, too. Does your vehicle shudder during acceleration, though? It can mean a loose U-joint. Maybe you hear clicks or knocks? They can mean a worn or failing CV joint. In any case, further damage to drive shaft parts can result.
